How can i photoshop a greyscale image to just have color in some areas?

i want to photoshop a image of me, greyscale it, but i want my colors to stay in color...how would i do that?

duplicate the layer, make the duplicate layer greyscale, then use the erase tool on the parts you want in color and yeah it works

All above true. You could also create a Fill/Adjustment layer of Hue/Saturation. Bring the saturation to zero and then work on the mask of that layer in black %26 white to control the impact of your layer.



Warning: for some reason, bringing the saturation of an image down to 0 won't be a true grayscale (I'd love to know why tho)
It would be easier to show you but I will suggest learning to use layers, the lasso or magic wand and the select menu.

you can also use layer masks. If you are creating a grey scale image from a color image and want one item to retain color you can also save your grey scale under another name and cut and paste from the color to the grey scale.
